Why Supporters Abandon Online Donation Journeys

When someone reaches a donation page, they have already demonstrated interest in your organisation. Yet many potential donors leave without completing their gift.

The problem is not always a lack of generosity. Often, the journey creates uncertainty or requires more effort than expected. Understanding these barriers can help improve fundraising without simply spending more on acquisition.

The Request Is Unclear

A fundraising message should explain what support will enable and why it is needed now. If someone cannot understand the purpose of the appeal, they may postpone the decision or leave.

Connect the campaign message, landing page and donation form. A supporter should not feel that they have entered an unrelated process after selecting “Donate.”

The Form Asks for Too Much

Every additional field creates effort. Some information may be necessary for processing, communication or regulatory purposes, but other questions may be included only because they could be useful later.

Review every field and ask whether it is needed at the point of donation. Optional questions should be clearly marked, and the form should work comfortably on a mobile device.

Trust Signals Are Missing

Donors need confidence that their payment and information will be handled responsibly. Use a secure, professional experience with recognisable branding, clear contact information and an accessible explanation of how data will be used.

Unexpected redirection to a differently branded payment platform can create doubt. If redirection is necessary, explain what will happen.

Payment Options Are Inconvenient

A supporter may abandon a gift if their preferred payment method is unavailable or the checkout process fails.

Regularly test the complete journey across devices and payment types rather than assuming the platform continues to work correctly.

There Is No Suitable Giving Choice

Donation amounts should provide useful guidance without making people feel constrained. Make it easy to select another amount and explain recurring giving clearly.

Improvement should continue after the transaction. The confirmation page and email should thank the donor, explain what happens next and establish the foundation for a respectful relationship.

Donation optimisation is not about pressuring people. It is about removing unnecessary obstacles between a supporter’s intention and their chosen action.
